Connect ChatGPT to your backlog
Stride AI gives ChatGPT your team’s delivery record: stories with their acceptance criteria, sprints, designs, documents, test cases and defects. It is Stride’s plugin in ChatGPT’s plugin directory, and it works over the Model Context Protocol (MCP). You sign in with your Stride account and choose which projects ChatGPT can reach.
What you need
- A Stride account in a workspace on a paid plan. Every paid plan includes MCP access; see pricing.
- A ChatGPT account. OpenAI offers its plugin directory on every ChatGPT plan; installing a plugin can also depend on your workspace, role and region. In a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, an admin chooses which plugins members can install.
How to install it
- In ChatGPT, open Plugins in the sidebar, search for Stride AI and open it. It is the one by Newlight Solutions. Or go straight to its listing.
- Select Install plugin. Stride’s sign-in opens.
- Sign in to Stride, choose the projects ChatGPT can reach (below), and click Allow. Back in ChatGPT, Stride AI is listed under Installed.
If the listing says Disabled by admin, an admin of your ChatGPT workspace has to make Stride AI available first, under Workspace settings → Plugins.
What Stride asks when you sign in
- Connect it to: the project ChatGPT’s work is recorded against, and the first one it reaches.
- Projects it can reach: that project plus any others you choose, or all your projects, including ones you join later.
- One connection per project. If Stride says you already have an agent connection for that project, the projects you choose apply to it as well, and it can be shared with other apps you signed in from, such as Claude. To give ChatGPT a reach of its own, connect it to a different project.
- ChatGPT acts with your role in each of those projects and never more, and everything it writes is labeled as the agent’s in Stride.
Use it in a conversation
ChatGPT uses Stride AI when a request needs it. To choose it yourself, type @ and pick Stride AI, or select + and enter its name; Try in chat and the example prompts on the plugin’s page start a chat with it too. For example:
- “Pick up my next Stride story and summarize what it needs.”
- “What’s still open in the current sprint, and who’s on it?”
- “Summarize ORB-526 with its acceptance criteria and any open defects.”
- “Write a test case for each acceptance criterion of ORB-526.”
- “File a high-severity defect against ORB-526: totals round down at checkout.”
Whether ChatGPT asks you first is the plugin’s permission setting. Open Stride AI under Plugins, select Manage, then Permission, and choose Always ask, Allow read-only tools, Allow low-risk tools (the default) or Allow all tools. Stride marks every tool that only reads as read-only and every delete as destructive, so ChatGPT can tell a read from a change.
What ChatGPT can do
Stride exposes 131 tools. Each call is checked against your permissions in the project before it runs, and every change is recorded in Stride’s audit log.
| Area | What ChatGPT can do |
|---|---|
| Plan | find, read and update stories, with their acceptance criteria, linked designs, documents and tests in one call; epics, sprints, releases, labels and story relations; bulk updates |
| Verify | test cases (one per acceptance criterion if you like), test runs and results, defects and quality gates |
| Design | generate UI mockups (HTML and CSS), architecture diagrams and BPMN processes for a story; read and link existing ones |
| Library | search and read documents such as meeting notes, PRDs, specs and retros; create documents and append to them |
| Optimize | processes, process insights and KPIs; legacy systems being modernized |
| Workspace | project members, comments and reactions, attachments, recent activity |
Generating a design, diagram or process uses your workspace’s AI credits and can take a few minutes. Stride carries on in the background, and ChatGPT can check on it until it is saved.
Access, privacy and disconnecting
- Only what you allowed. ChatGPT reaches the projects you chose, with your role in each: in a project you can read but not edit, ChatGPT can only read too.
- Labeled and logged. Comments and changes ChatGPT makes are labeled as the agent’s, and every action is in the audit log.
- Disconnect from either side. In Stride, open Settings → Integrations and disconnect ChatGPT under Connected apps; it loses access at once. In ChatGPT, open Stride AI under Plugins, select Manage, and choose Disconnect from your Stride account’s menu, or Uninstall to remove the plugin.
- Where requests come from. ChatGPT calls Stride from OpenAI’s servers, not from your computer. How Stride handles your data is in the privacy policy and on Security & Trust.
Using Codex too
Codex shares ChatGPT’s plugin directory, so Stride AI installs there as well: run /plugins in the Codex CLI, or open Plugins in the ChatGPT desktop app. In Codex it adds two skills: $stride:next picks up your next story and $stride:done hands it back for review. The Codex guide covers them, the other ways to connect Codex, and the agent keys that CI runs use.
If something goes wrong
- Stride AI isn’t in Plugins, or says Disabled by admin. In a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, an admin decides which plugins members can install. Otherwise, what you can install can depend on your plan and region.
- ChatGPT asks you to connect Stride again. The sign-in ended: it was disconnected in Stride, or it went unused for 30 days. Open Stride AI’s Manage page, choose Reconnect from your Stride account’s menu, and sign in again.
- A project is missing. ChatGPT reaches only the projects you chose. Choose Reconnect, as above, and tick the project on Stride’s sign-in screen.
- Sign-in stops at a plan limit. A new connection uses one of your plan’s API or agent keys. Disconnect an app you no longer use under Connected apps, or move to a plan with more keys.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add Stride to ChatGPT?
In ChatGPT, open Plugins in the sidebar, search for Stride AI (by Newlight Solutions) and select Install plugin. Stride’s sign-in opens: sign in, choose the projects ChatGPT can reach, and click Allow.
Which ChatGPT plans can use Stride AI?
OpenAI offers its plugin directory on every ChatGPT plan, though installing a plugin can also depend on your workspace, role and region. In a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, admins choose which plugins members can install; if Stride AI shows Disabled by admin, ask yours to make it available.
What can ChatGPT see in Stride?
Only the projects you chose when you allowed it, and in each only what you can see yourself. ChatGPT acts with your role in each project, so it cannot change anything you could not change, and everything it writes is labeled as the agent’s.
Does ChatGPT ask before it changes anything?
You set that in ChatGPT, for each plugin: open Stride AI under Plugins, select Manage, then Permission, and choose Always ask, Allow read-only tools, Allow low-risk tools (the default) or Allow all tools. Stride marks every tool that only reads as read-only and every delete as destructive, so ChatGPT can tell a read from a change.
Which Stride plan do I need?
Every paid plan includes MCP access. Connecting an app uses one of your plan’s API or agent keys, unless it joins a connection you already have for the same project. Starter includes one key, and Pro and Enterprise raise the limit. See the pricing page for the full breakdown.
Is it the same plugin in Codex?
Yes. ChatGPT and Codex share OpenAI’s plugin directory, so Stride AI installs in Codex too, with the same Stride server. There it also adds two skills: $stride:next picks up your next story and $stride:done hands it back for review.
How do I disconnect ChatGPT?
In Stride, open Settings → Integrations and disconnect ChatGPT under Connected apps; it loses access at once. Or, in ChatGPT, open Stride AI under Plugins, select Manage, and choose Disconnect from your Stride account’s menu, or Uninstall to remove the plugin.
