Enabler epic
An enabler epic is the portfolio-level version of an enabler story — a large infrastructure, architecture, or exploration investment that spans multiple PIs and provides foundation for business epics. Enabler epics go through the Portfolio Kanban alongside business epics, with WSJF scoring that includes risk-reduction value.
Examples of enabler epics: a multi-quarter migration from monolith to modular services, a platform replatform from on-prem to cloud, the introduction of a new data warehouse foundation, or a major compliance certification project. The visibility at portfolio level is the point: without it, the work either competes invisibly for engineering time or gets serially deprioritised against business epics with more obvious revenue links. SAFe's Lean Portfolio Management practice budgets explicitly for enabler epics — typically 20-40% of value-stream capacity — so the conversation is about ratio rather than approval.
