Honest comparison

Connected delivery, not just open-source docs.

Stride vs Outline — when your wiki needs to know about the work it describes.

Outline is a fast, open-source knowledge base — self-hosted or SaaS, clean editor, good search. Stride is a connected software-delivery platform where docs are one module among four; PRDs link to stories, ADRs link to tests, runbooks link to release notes.

Stride is best for

Software-delivery teams whose docs (PRDs, ADRs, runbooks) need to connect to the stories, tests, and code they describe.

Outline is best for

Engineering-led teams who want a fast, focused, optionally-self-hosted knowledge base and have other tools for PM/QA/architecture.

Where Stride wins

  • Docs connected to stories, ADRs, tests, defects, release notes — one queryable graph. Outline is docs-only by design.
  • AI on delivery artifacts (acceptance criteria, test cases, ADRs generated from doc context). Outline has no AI generation; AI search was added in 2024.
  • Sprint planning, test management, defect tracking, architecture decisions — all in one tool. Outline is just docs.
  • Hosted SaaS with SOC 2 in progress. Outline's self-hosted-open-source path is great for ops-heavy teams but requires maintaining infrastructure.

Where Outline wins

  • Outline is open-source (BSL license) and self-hostable — full control, no SaaS lock-in, $0 license cost when self-hosted.
  • Outline's editor is fast and minimal — one of the best Markdown editors in the category. Stride's docs editor is good but Outline's focus is sharper.
  • Outline's simplicity is the right answer for teams whose primary need is "internal knowledge base, low friction." Stride is overbuilt if that's the only job.

Frequently asked

Can I import from Outline?
Outline exports as Markdown ZIP. Stride imports Markdown directly. Cross-doc links rewrite; attachments transfer.
Does Stride open-source the platform like Outline does?
No. Stride is a closed-source SaaS. The closest open path is the public API at /settings/api-docs (for signed-in users) which lets you build on top.
What about self-hosting?
Stride offers single-tenant cloud + on-premise/hybrid options on the Enterprise tier. Not the Outline-style "drop the container in your k8s cluster" path — Enterprise deployments include managed service onboarding.
